More National Media Attention

First it was local. Then it hit the blogs. Now, we've gone national!

ABC News has a story on the CCLU book burners and Ginny's related crusade. I love the opening lines:

There are 174,000 books in the West Bend Community Memorial Library, but Robert Braun, 74, of West Allis, Wis., just wants to burn one -- "Baby Be-Bop," by Francesca Lia Block.

"We will have demonstrations if they don't remove it," he said. "It has to be out of the library. If that doesn't happen, I will be out there burning."

Maybe Letterman will joke about us next....

  1. Lordy, lordy, lordy. And Ginny said in her profile of the 25 "most influential people in Washington County" (sic) that she doesn't like the spotlight. Hmm - me thinks she told the reporter a fib.

  3. Below is a quote from Bob over at Boots and Sabers and my responce... What ya think?

"29.I’m waiting for someone to perform an open-records request on Vrana and the rest of the “They’re stonewalling” city council regarding the library board issue. Oh wait, Vrana says, “he’s not obligated to keep track of those things.” He’s above everyone else because he agrees with the right people and the right people have said he is of the morally-superior type (plus he does not nor has he ever had a library card like the people who made it past the initital selection process for the voluntary lib board."

    My reply

Hm.. Not a bad idea Bob, not a bad idea…. Interesting indeed…..

    Respectfully,
    Kristina

  4. The profile was a Wednesday supplement to the WB Daily News in early May. Quite an interesting article on Ginny. You might be able to archive it if you have a hard copy subscription via their website.

  5. Completely off topic from this post, but I gotta say it...

I LOVE the fact that no one on these blogs used the phrase "ad hominem" until you. Since you used it, seems like people are throwing it around left and right to try and sound more intelligent. That's a nice, albeit indirect, compliment to you.

  6. Kristina:

I have a print copy of the supplement, which was called "45 On the Move" and is dated April 29. I can photocopy it for you next week.

Free West Bend, I'm sure Sleepless' use of the ad hominem phrase began with the idea of poking fun at Dan Kleinman's (Safelibraries.org) extensive use of the term.

  7. Maria,
Thanks I would like that. By the way I have some quotes from Ginny she has made in different TV interviews. I quantify (sp) them but do not paraphrase them. They go hand in hand with your timeline of how the complaint evolved. It's interesting.

  8. Nice work, Kristina. (the post is here)

And yes, and open records request for all the alderman regarding this issue would be in order.

And I wonder if Ginny would be willing to turn over her emails (especially between SafeLibraries.net), since she argues she speaks for the entire community, she should have nothing to hide from them...

  9. CWBC,
Well, I have more info about the CC and another prominent blog writer from a few weeks ago. Getting the rest of the info this week. It's really a you scratch my back I'll scratch yours between the blogger and certain aldermEn. More on that to come later.

As far as the Emails between Ginnty and Safelibraries if there are any, since they are not public OFFICIALS or the EMPLOYEES of the city they do not make the standards.

However, for alderman that do not have city email accounts there wouildneed to be a court order to allow officials to look into their personal computers AND ONLY information regarding the issue at hand could be supenaed (oh the spelling). Any thing else would not be permitted. So no personal stuff or anything. Only info about issue. I'm ok with that.

  10. Yes, Kristina, I know that Ginny isn't subject to the open records laws. What I'm suggesting is that if she claims to speak for the community, and that she indeed has the best interest of the community (and its children) in mind, she should open herself up to the same scrutiny she's demanding of official community representatives (ie, the Library Board).

  11. Got it. but why would she when her only defense has been silence when confronted with the solid evidence against her. See my comments on Boots and Sabers I think the first one about tax dollars and her lack of fiscal responsibility is around # 68 or low 70, she replied and I commented back and posed a challenge to her. Truth or dare? Do you still stand by your statements of standing by your original complaint? And do you still stand by the statement that you ACTUALLY did refile your complaint in APRIL and have not heard anything back?
I don't know if she will answer. We shall see maybe she'll suprise me. I doubt it though.
    Respectfully,
    Kristina

  12. Maria said, "Dan Kleinman's (Safelibraries.org) extensive use of the term."

    Guilty.

But maybe I'm just naming extensive use of the logical fallacy properly called an ad hominem argument.

    From Wikipedia:

Ad hominem: "An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: 'argument to the man', 'argument against the man') consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim.

"The process of proving or disproving the claim is thereby subverted, and the argumentum ad hominem works to change the subject."

The problem here is the persistent use of ad hominem argument, not the naming of such argument for what it is. I just call it as it is, and it happens almost exclusively with some people. Is it my fault for calling it out, or is it someone's fault for attacking other people in the first place so as to "change the subject"?

Is deriding my naming of such argument for what it is or anyone else's use of the phrase itself ad hominem in nature?

  14. Wow is right! She is going after Nick and Nora? Ha! The kids in it who hook up- don't have sex. They decide not to because they want to wait until they get to know each other better. Ginny is putting on other blogs that she is "about to reveal" the contents of the ORR, and that it will be "big." This isn't about "protecting the kids" its about getting attention for Ginny and her anti-homosexual religous agenda.
