The World is Laughing at West Bend...Thanks, Ginny

Remember that ridiculous lawsuit by the so-called "Christian Civil Liberties Union" against the the city of West Bend, Mayor Kristine Deiss, the West Bend Library Board and Library Director Michael Tyree? Remember how they argue (without likely ever actually driving to West Bend and reading the book) that the young adult book Baby Be-Bop includes words that "are derogatory and slanderous to all males, and dangerously offensive and disrespectful to all people" and that "can permeate violence, and puts one's life in possible jeopardy, adults and children alike"? Remember how they are demanding the destruction of the book, the resignation of the mayor, and $30,000 for each of the 4 plaintiffs?

Well, seems this is getting more attention, and not the kind West Bend wants. Recently the story was picked up by the very popular and influential blogs Talking Points Memo and Daily Kos, not to mention the Times Online and the Drudge Retort, and the West Bend community is not cast in a very positive light.

Thanks, Ginny Maziarka.

// This incident has now crossed the big pond: The online site for the major British newspaper, The Guardian, has a story about the CCLU's vendetta against West Bend's copy of Baby Be-Bop. Cheerio!

  1. Oh man, are you kidding me? These sites are really not anything in the grand scheme of things. A few of my friends as far west as southern california (orange, LA, San Diego counties) have heard about this and as far south as New Oreans. All the state chatter is well just that.
Maybe tomorrow I'll turn on the news and see Charlie Gibson or Brian Williams talking about it. Or how about Rush, O'Riley, Hannity O I can see it now... LOL
By the way sleepless could you contact me via my blog. I have a question I need the answer to. Motley has a link to it on his. You could also Google justmythoughts-kristina and that will take ya there as well.
    Thanks,

  2. Hi Kristina: Just FYI, but being on Daily KOS is a big deal, as that blog gets over 20 million hits a month.

Anyway, I checked your blog and didn't immedialy see an e-mail address or way to contact you. Perhaps you want to send me an e-mail at concerned.west.bend.citizen [at] gmail.com

  3. It's over. My reply is over on my blog so as not to have to type it over and over again to others. Plus it took 2 postings to comment and explain.
    Thanks,

  4. Are you aware that there has been yet another open records request filed with the library and it's board? Yup, she has requested pages and pages of all email correspondence (sp) between the library and all the board and Deborah Caldwell - Stone?
    So here we go again.

  6. Maria,
Right? I agree just to sit and admire his cuteness. LOL
I may be out of blog-is-phere land for a few days. My "caretaker" 78 year old mother, had a small stroke this morning and I have no idea if I will have time or energy to do anything in cyber for a few days.
    Priority is family first...

  7. "[T]he West Bend community is not cast in a very positive light." Please expand on that. I have read a number of articles on the topic and the target is clearly the CCLU, not the West Bend community.

Indeed at least one article specifically noted at least one part of the West Bend community is not involved: "Even the people involved in that effort, West Bend Citizens for Safe Libraries, has disavowed the complaint against Baby Be-Bop and the four Christian Civil Liberties Union members behind it."

  8. The world is not laughing at West Bend, because the nonsense coming out your city is too sad to laugh at. Book Burning?? Seriously?

It's time to have your drinking water tested for trace elements of stupidity.
